New Shit!
So, everybody has those moments where they get sick of the music they’ve been listening to. Whatever genre you’ve been getting sick of, I guarantee it isn’t this. Bob Ostertag has been in the game for a while now, and has just released a brand new album. His catalog is absolutely MASSIVE, and has produced a wide variety of music in his lifetime. My personal favorites are All The Rage and Sooner Or Later. His new album sounds very unlike these, but has worked its way to the top of my favorites list for this week, and perhaps for a while. For his newest album, Motormouth, Bob used a Buchla 200e for the entire 8 track album. I was not only fortunate enough to use one of these, but I was also taught everything I know about the 200e by Bob Ostertag himself in the UC Davis Technocultural Studies Sound Lab. Watching this album come together was nothing short of spectacular. As someone who listens to both contemporary rap and some avant-garde computer music, I assure you that you’ve never heard anything like this. So put down your preconceptions of what music should be and breathe in the fresh air that is Motormouth.
Oh yea, I also forgot to mention that all his albums are completely free. So, you really have no excuse not to at least listen.

Riff Raff (feat. G5 Kid) - Graveyard Music (SODMG/Riff Raff Records, 2011)
I just hope that Riff Raff gets some better guest appearances with this SODMG deal; the unknown rappers that’re featured all over his mixtapes serve as nothing more than a distraction. When you have a rapper with the charisma of Riff Raff, the last thing you want to hear is the padding of lesser rappers.
Funny. Charisma or not I still find Riff Raff to be somewhere between harmlessly mediocre and destructively insufferable (that hook!), but G5 Murph - the male half of “Pretty Boy Swag” production team G5 Kids - kind of comes off here. His verse starts off like a super slowed and over-enunciated take on the Travie/Roscoe style and then deteriorates into the Young Based God HOMD flow. He sleeps with dolphins (Tyler nod?) and the beat slaps too. As does this one.
How old is Riff Raff? When he takes off his makeup and rapper costume he straight looks like a 45 year old dad.
Interesting. I have to agree with Andrew Noz on this one. You can definitely year the Lil’ B influences in G5’s verse (I’m a zombie/I should be with coffins/blah blah I sleep with dolphins). Swag is starting to catch on as a genre. Be on the lookout for more #based #rare rappers I get the feeling they’re going to be all over the underground scene in like four months. I wonder how long we’ve got until white people start going based ironically? Six months? Oh wait.
